Two small birds I'm stuck on

Need help identifying a bird? Please post your question here and if possible include a photo. Also let us know where and when you saw the bird. Other things that help are listing any field marks that stood out, behavioral information like how it walked, hopped or flew. This Forum is just for North American birds.

Two small birds I'm stuck on

Post by MtnAg08 »

One I think is some type of flycatcher but can't figure out which. The other I don't have a guess on. If anybody has any ideas I'd be very appreciative. Thanks!

First is a House Sparrow,

Second I'm thinking Ruby-crowned Kinglet.

I can get male House Sparrow's no problem. The females keep throwing me for a loop. Thanks

This is correct. Note the bulbous bill on the House Sparrow and the lack of a hooked bill on the kinglet. And kinglets exhibit much different behavior than flycatchers - kinglets are busy in the canopies of trees and flick their wings as they forage while flycatchers sit relatively still on a branch, sally out to catch an insect, then fly right back to a branch.

And the kinglet's wingbars and front-and-back eye crescents are visible in the first photo. ;)
