The Osprey from the nest up the road have provided lots of photo opportunities since we moved here. This Osprey with nesting material is from April 2022.

I'm having trouble remembering ever having a bird of prey as the species of the week. Maybe an owl. Bear in mind I've only been around here for about two years.
Kevin and I probably burned through the raptors before you got here.

That certainly would have been better than some of what popped up on yesterday's schedule.

It isn't a great photo; it was taken with a cell phone, but an Osprey it is.

That looks like a trout that may have been at the limits of what the bird could lift!

Lockwood Folly River, a tidal estuary, Brunswick County, southern coastal NC. July 2024.

The bird was perched in a dead pine about 60 feet up. It was definitely watching me, turning its head as I moved. I love the posture in this one.

The fish was probably in the neighborhood of 18-20 inches long, maybe 2-3 pounds. I was moving an irrigation wheel-line in an alfalfa field when I saw the Osprey land on top of the duck blind. So I can't say if it was having trouble lifting the fish, or not, but I expect that was the case; otherwise, it would have flown off elsewhere to eat its breakfast.

Good last-weekend-of-March morning, Whatbirders. Without further delay,

Pied-billed Grebe

The guideline is only one photo per species per week, please. On those occasions when I name more than one species, you're welcome to post one photo of each species. Details and stories behind the photos are encouraged!
