Another little grey bird throwing me for a loop

Need help identifying a bird? Please post your question here and if possible include a photo. Also let us know where and when you saw the bird. Other things that help are listing any field marks that stood out, behavioral information like how it walked, hopped or flew. This Forum is just for North American birds.

Another little grey bird throwing me for a loop

Post by MtnAg08 »

I saw both of these birds today but at different times in different spots. I think they're the same species though. Both in the Avon, CO area. I'm guessing it's a type of sparrow but no pictures online are giving me confidence of what type. Thanks!

Cassin's Finch maybe, although I've never seen one.

I've seen a lot of those lately. They've always had the yellow showing on the wing/tail area. I know you can't see that area great in these photos but I didn't pick it up looking at them either. Can some of them not really show the yellow? Thanks for the help!

I know they're in this area and every time I see a finch I'm hoping it will finally be one and not another House. Of course, I'm not good enough at identifying them that I'm not sure I'd be able to tell the difference anyway.

I think it is a Pine Siskin with a bill issue/deformity, which is very confusing. I see the tiniest bit of yellow on the wing in the second photo.

I thought they looked like Pine Siskins even though I cannot see the yellow that would give such away.

I hadn't considered Cassin's Finch and wish someone more expert would weigh in at this point.

Saw some more Siskins on my lunch walk today (didn't take pictures) and since I was looking was able to see the resemblance to these photos. Definitely could be that. Appreciate yalls input!

The facial pattern is too week for Cassin's.

The chunky bill threw me and I was wondering about options.
