Tern species, North Carolina

Need help identifying a bird? Please post your question here and if possible include a photo. Also let us know where and when you saw the bird. June 20, 2026. Mouth of the Cape Fear River, southeastern end of the NC coast.

I vote Sandwich. Pictures a bit washed out but think you can make out white tip to bill & the wingtips also seem good.

Just a little black on the underside at the very tip like in the attached screenshot from Sibley’s. Again it’s hard to see in the pictures but I think you can see it in your first photo.
